I have looked at standard BAPI's like 'BAPI_CUSTOMER_GETLIST' where they use BAPIRETURN or BAPIRETURN1 in the export tab to send back the messages.

Return structures: BAPIRETURN or BAPIRET2 | SCN
You can see the where used list of the two structures. In ECC 6, I found BAPIRET2 is been used in 98% of the function modules and hence use BAPIRET2 only.

Populate the BAPIRETURN where the badi does not contain any return paramet
I'm using badi to send error message to interface which communicates with the legacy system, but this badi does not contain any return parameter (BAPIRET2) to send back the error message to calling function module. I tried to use CRM_MESSAGE_COLLECT to send the error message back to calling function module but the problem here is I'm using BP related badi where CRM_MESSAGE_COLLECT cannot be used...
